Lukasz Kubot dismisses Gael Monfils in the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number 93, qualifier Lukasz Kubot of Poland upset ninth seed, French Gael Monfils of France in four sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 32 of Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club in London on Saturday. The
Polish took two hours and sixteen minutes to oust his opponent in a tough contest.
Monfils was the first to take lead as he broke Kubot in the second game of the first set and held his serve in the next game to take a 3-0 lead. After that, the Polish claimed six successive games, breaking the French three times
and winning the set 6-3.
Kubot kept his first serve percentage at 54 percent and delivered a single ace in the first set. The Polish hit fourteen winners and converted 57 percent of the first serves into points in the opening set. The 29-year-old saved
two of the three break points he faced and converted all the three break points on Monfils’ serve in the first set.
Monfils staged a comeback in the second set, breaking his opponent in the fifth game and holding his serve in the next game to go ahead 4-2. Serving at 3-5, Kubot could not hold his serve, losing the set 3-6.
The French served superbly, firing seven aces and 94 percent of the first serves in the second set. The Paris resident smacked fourteen winners, sealing 47 percent of the return points in the second set.
After losing a one-sided second set, Kubot regained the lost momentum as he broke Monfils in the third and ninth game of the third set to win it 6-3.
The Polish smashed fifteen winners and 60 percent of the first serves in the third set, winning 78 percent of the points on them. The right-handed did not commit any double fault but made three unforced errors in the third set.
On the other hand, Monfils committed three double faults and four unforced errors in the third set.
With winning momentum on his side, Kubot needed a single break of serve in the fourth set to claim it 6-3.
The Polish sealed sixteen of the 25 net approach points in the fourth set. The Lubin resident hit a single ace and eleven winners in the fourth set. The six feet and three inches tall clinched the one break point he received in
the fourth set.
Kubot is drawn to play world number 44 Feliciano Lopez of Spain in the fourth round.
