Lukasz Kubot pounces over Karol Beck to reach round two – French Open 2012
Polish star, Lukasz Kubot, eased past the Slovakian challenger, Karol Beck, in straight sets at the Roland Garros 2012 on Monday. He jolted down a 7-5, 6-2, 7-5 victory against the world number 104 to book a spot in the round of 64 at this second of the
four Grand Slam event held in Paris, France.
Kubot tumbled over his fellow 30-year-old in three sets after converting seven out of 13 break chances to his advantage. After earning this success, Kubot not only avenged his loss at the Compaq Cup 11 years ago but also advanced into the round of 64 at
this major clay court event.
The 30-year-old Pole assertively entered the court number 17 and despite losing his serve twice, he cashed in three out of nine break chances to clinch the set with a 7-5 score line.
Ranked 49th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Kubot kept momentum rolling into the follow-up set. He swiped in his entire serves after brushing off all seven breakpoints he came across. The Pole cashed in both break opportunities
and clicked the set by winning six games to two.
Kubot carried his winning ways in the final set and tremendously fended off five out of six breakpoints he encountered. He recovered quickly and after cashing in his second break chance in the last game, the Pole clicked the set with a 7-5 win.
Summing up the Pole’s performance, Kubot clobbered a better first serve share of 70 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 56 per cent and impressively marked 51 out of 78 points on it. He also spilled fewer unforced errors and sealed the match by pocketing
115 points.
Next up for Kubot is the French qualifier, Florent Serra, who registered a 5-0 retirement victory against 15th seeded Feliciano Lopez.
The world number one, Novak Djokovic, also stole the spotlight later that day. He blasted past Italy’s Potitio Starace with a breadstick to set up this duel. The Serbian ace was never threatened with any breakpoint and capitalised on four out of 15 break
chances to formulate a 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-1 score line.
