Lukasz Kubot stuns Marcel Granollers in the second round - Agricole Suisse Open 2012
World number 80, Lukasz Kubot, stunned the 20th ranked Spaniard, Marcel Granollers, in the second round of the Credit Agricole Suisse Open on the eve of Thursday.
The 30-year-old Pole won the clash in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 and dispatched the second seed Spaniard without any problem at all. It was another disappointing end to the 20th ranked Spanish star who looked good in his
first encounter of the tournament.
Unfortunately for the 26-year-old Spaniard, he wasn’t able to discover her form and committed several unforced errors that drowned his morale completely. He only managed to survive only an hour and 36 minutes at the clay courts
of Gstaad, Swtizerland. It was a mix of bad luck and some poor shot selection that led to the downfall of the 26-year-old Spaniard.
Kubot was under the cosh in the opening game of the match but did well to hang on to his serve and deny her opponent from an early lead. Granollers commenced the second game in emphatic fashion and won it without losing a single
point. He broke serve in the following game of the match and took a lead of 2-1.
It looked like a repeat performance of the previous two battles that ended up in successful fashion for the Spanish star. However, the tables were turned upon the 20th ranked Spaniard in the following three games in
which Kubot won a breakthrough back to level the scores at 3-3.
The match was still favouring the second seed Spaniard who was jolted by the Pole star in the second half of the opening set. Granollers did well to hang on for a while but faltered miserably in the 10th game that proved
to be the final action of the opening set.
Kubot continued to impress with his classic play and met blow-by-blow to his rival in the second set as well. Scores moved on to 3-2 in his favour just before he won a breakpoint to further prolong his lead to 4-2.
It was becoming increasingly difficult for the Spanish star to keep his hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals alive. He managed to win just one point in the seventh game of the set that drowned him to a trail of 2-5. Furthermore,
a classic performance was rounded off in emphatic fashion with Kubot winning four points from the last five played on his rival’s serve.
Kubot plays his next match with Grigor Dimitrov.
