Lukasz Kubot trounces Florent Serra to reach round three – Roland Garros 2012
Polish star, Lukasz Kubot, stomped over the local qualifier, Florent Serra, in straight sets at the French Open 2012 on Wednesday. He summed up a 7-6(0), 6-2, 7-6(4) victory against the world number 156 to progress into the third
round at this second Grand Slam of the season taking place in Paris, France.
The 30-year-old stayed focused throughout the match to pull out the victory in their first tour level meeting. However, the contestants did duel each other twice at the qualifying competition of the Paris Masters 1000 event and
after earning this success, Kubot not only maintained his winning streak against Serra but also secured a spot in the round of 32 at this major clay court tournament.
Kubot high-spiritedly entered the court number seven and drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. Apart from losing his edge in the fourth game, he stayed in the right direction and capitalised on another
break chance in the 11th game to go 6-5 up. He squandered the chance of serving out the set but slaughtered Serra in the tie-breaker to click the opener with a 7-6(0) win.
Ranked 49th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Kubot lost his path towards the second set and suffered the first blow in the opening game. However, he not only recovered in the very next game but stroke
out the last four games in a row after the local contender held his serve in the fourth game. As a result, the Pole pulled out the set with a 6-2 score line in 38 minutes.
The Polish star kept momentum sailing into the third set and after earning the coveted break in the second game, he jumped to a 3-0 lead. Apart from losing his serve twice after that, Kubot recovered in the 10th game
and took the set to the tie-breaker. He edged past Serra in it and clinched the set with a 7-6(4) score line.
Overall, Kubot manipulated a better first serve share of 63 per cent as compared to his rival’s 60 per cent and impressively marked 50 out of 69 points on it. He also struck eight aces and hammered 49 winners to earn the limelight.
Kubot will next confront the winner of the match between local wildcard Arnaud Clement and the Belgian lucky loser, David Goffin. The Pole needs to stay calm throughout the match in order to secure a place in the fourth round.
