Lukasz Kubot upsets Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in 2nd round – Mercedes Cup 2011
Pole Lukasz Kubot bounced back from set down to secure a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez in their second round match at the 2011 Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany.
Not playing each other for the first time, both players dulled it out against one another on hard courts in the US Open first round where The 29-year-old, Polish (Lukasz Kubot) lost his battle against the 28-year-old, losing 6-3,6-2,7-6(4).
The Celestial Power gave another chance to Lukasz Kubot to even the head to head score to a 1-1.
The first set of the match was the most exciting and entertaining part as Garcia served two aces and only two double faults. It was a close match as both the players saw a difference of one percent in their total set service points
with Garcia achieving sixty nine percent and Lukasz sixty eight percent along with one percent difference in the total set return points; Garcia scoring a thirty two percent and Lukasz attaining thirty one percent. However, Lukasz gained the competitive edge
as he managed to save both his break points and also won a break point making it a hundred percent and hence, winning a total of thirty out of fifty four points.
Worn out from the first set, the world number thirty eight, Garcia lost the set 4-6 and although Garcia managed an ace, did not falter at his serve and an excellent score of sixty percent of total set serve points, he was only
able to achieve one break point out of the two break points, his total set return points were a mere thirty nine percent and won only forty eight percent of the total set points.
Kubot made a comeback, served no aces, had five double faults out of which four hit the net and one was a fault line, he managed to save two out of three breakpoints and won both his breakpoint opportunities making it a walloping
hundred percent and was able to achieve sixty one percent of the total set serve points. The Polish then went on to win forty percent of his total return points. Hence, he achieved fifty two percent points; winning the second set and making the set score card
to 1-1.
Frustrated from the second set, the Lopez in the third set completely lost control over his game; he was only able to attain a bare fifty percent win in the first serve points along with a poor performance in the first return serve
in which he won a mere twenty four points not being able to save any of his breakpoints won a break point he lost the set with a total of fifty percent win of total service set points along with a pathetic twenty eight percent win in the total set return
points and hence only won thirty eight percent of his total set points.
Lukasz was able to avail both breakpoint opportunities to his advantage, smash an ace, and had great precision over his serve. Although he didn’t save a breakpoint, he was able to win seventy two percent of total set service points
along with fifty percent of total return points, therefore, achieving a grand sixty two percent of total set points which was almost twice the percentage of his opponent and hence winning the set with a lead of 2-1.
The overall sets of the match; Lukasz Kubot statistics, saw five aces, won a total of sixty one percent of total points served and a total of thirty four return points and thus winning forty seven percent of total match points.
Whereas, Lopez played 2 aces, and had fifteen service games.
The Pole now moves ahead on to the quarterfinal to play against Spaniard Santiago GIraldo.
