Lukasz Kubot wrestles it out with Daniel Gimeno-Traver in 1st round – Mercedes Cup 2011
Lukasz Kubot wrapped up the first round of the 2011 Mercedes Cup against Daniel Gimeno-Traver at the TC Weissenhof Court, Stuttgart, Germany. Playing each other for the first time this season, both players dulled it out against
one another.
The 29-year-old, Polish (Lukasz Kubot) battled against the 25-year-old, Espanola on classic clay courts, winning 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-2
The first set of the match was the most exciting and entertaining part as Gimeno-Traver served six aces and only two double faults. Both the players had won sixty nine percent of the total service points and thirty one percent
of the total return points, however, Lukasz gained the competitive edge as he managed to save one out of two break points making it a fifty percent and hence, winning a total of thirty nine out of seventy four points.
Worn out from the first set, the world number sixty nine, Kubot lost the set 3-6 and although Gimeno-Traver managed to win one out of two break points, his total return points were a mere seventeen percent and won only thirty eight
percent of the total set points. While, Gimeno-Traver served six aces, zero double faults and had achieved fifty five percent of the second return points. Daniel then went on to win twenty out of twenty four of total service points and nine out of twenty three
total return points. Hence, he achieved sixty two percent points, winning the second set.
Frustrated from the second set, the Polish (Kubot) made a comeback in the third set. He played fourteen out of fifteen service points and had a ninety three percent win, he also managed to score five out of six in his second return
service and had an equal ninety three percent win. Lukasz was able to save all three of his break points and was able to win seventy eight percent of total service points along with fifty two percent of total return points thus attaining a sixty six percent
of total set points winning the set 6-2. Although Gimeno-Traver played one ace and had only one double fault he was not able to avail any of the three breakpoint opportunities. His overall service points in the set were forty eight percent, total return points
were merely twenty two percent and his total points won were only fifteen out of forty four and was only able to win thirty four percent of the total set points.
The overall sets of the match; from D.G Traver statistics, saw thirteen aces, only three double faults, won a total of sixty eight percent of total points served and a total of thirty one return points and thus winning forty eight
percent of total match points. Whereas, Kubot played four aces, seven double faults and had fourteen service games. In a nutshell he won sixty nine percent of his total service points and won thirty two percent of total return points enabling him to achieve
fifty two percent of total match points. The scores between both the players was extremely close, however, Lukasz managed to save seventy one percent of his break points and gained an edge and therefore won 2-1 set.
He now moves ahead on to the second round to play against Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez.
