Luke Charlesworth beats Karl Dowland to clinch Men’s Singles title at Wellington North Open 2012
New Zealand’s Luke Charlesworth registered his supremacy on court as he secured Men’s Singles title after beating his lower ranked challenger Karl Dowland in the final showdown at Wellington North Open 2012 in New Zealand, on Saturday, July 21.
Charlesworth, who was positioned at the top in Men’s Singles draw of the tournament, played to his maximum potential against the second seeded Dowland and managed to win the match without facing any tough resistance.
The top seeded Charlesworth was on a different level while playing against his lower ranked challenger and emerged as the winner in straight games with a huge margin on the score board.
In the meanwhile, the second seeded Dowland could not prove his worth against his higher ranked compatriot and also failed to maintain his power play. He was quite vulnerable to Charlesworth and lost to him easily without clinching any set.
In the opening game, Charlesworth started his run in a sensational manner as he played with tremendous precision and managed to take a striking lead until the end of opening half.
After the interval, the lower ranked Dowland tried to play positive badminton while taking the bird early but he failed to destroy the defence of his rival and remained struggling.
On the other hand, Charlesworth remained on track and progressed with an impressive speed as he did not take much time in wrapping up the opening game of the title match with an impressive 21-13 margin on the score board.
In the following set, Dowland played at his best speed and also did not let Charlesworth to take an early lead this time.
However, Charlesworth managed a reasonable gap on the score board until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Charlesworth continued pushing his rival in all areas of the court without sparing any chance for him to fight back into the game.
The in-form Charlesworth showed his brilliance all the way to grab the second game with a remarkable 21-17 score on the board.
Charlesworth won the Men’s Singles title after crushing his team-mate in two sets by a huge margin of 21-13 and 21-17.
