Luke Davis and Dion Atkinson victorious in Round 2 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro
The thrilling surfing resumed at the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, November 22, as the first stop of Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the Reef Hawaiian Pro, continued with the Round of 96 (Round 2). The day kicked off with America’s Luke Davis squaring
off with South Africa’s Shaun Joubert, Australia’s Lincoln Taylor and Brazil’s Yuri Sodre in the ninth heat, while the tenth heat saw Australia’s Dion Atkinson take on his compatriot Adam Robertson, Hawaii’s Jamie O’Brien and France’s Joan Duru.
Davis clinched a comfortable win in the ninth heat to make his way into the Round of 64 (Round 3), while Joubert extended his life in the competition as well after securing runner-up position. Taylor and Sodre rounded out third and fourth position respectively,
consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The tenth heat saw Atkinson confirm his place Round 3 after prevailing in the four-man battle. Robertson successfully secured runner-up place to extend his stay in the competition. O’Brien and Duru got ejected from the competition after finishing in third
and fourth position respectively.
The primary event site received high tides with stiff off-shore winds on the second active day of the competition. The surfers had a challenging task at hand as they entered the seas and began their search for competitive scores.
As the ninth heat kicked off, the 18-year-old Davis got off to a shaky start, but eventually found his rhythm and posted a 6.33 on the score-board. He added another 5.10 points to his account in the final minutes of the battle to finish with a heat-total
of 11.43 points. The score remained unbeatable and consequently carried him off to victory.
Joubert got off to a decent start, earning 5.00 points off his first wave. However, he failed to follow it up with a decent score and finishing in second place with a heat-total of 8.83 points.
Taylor finished in third place with a heat-total of 7.17 points, which included a 5.10 and 2.07-point wave. Sodre, on the other hand, got completely outdone by the conditions at hand and was only able to catch one scoring wave, which allowed him to post
a lone score of 3.67 on the score-board.
The 10th heat saw the 25-year-old Atkinson take control of the four-man battle in the opening minutes with a 6.83-point wave, only to soon add another 6.17 points to his account and take his heat-total to 13.00 points. The score served to seal
the fate of the heat in his favour.
Robertson rounded out the runner-up place with a heat-total of 11.73 points, which included a 6.00 and 5.73-point wave.
O’Brien failed to make much of an impact after only managing to collect a 4.43 and 4.37 off his top-two waves, while Duru failed to recover from a disappointing start and finished in fourth place with a heat-total of 8.07 points. The lacklustre performances
of the two surfers led to their ejection from the competition.
