Luke Donald aims for another victory at Volvo Match Play Championships – European Tour News
Luke Donald, who holds the third spot in the official world golf rankings, will once again want to prove that he is the best player, when it comes to the match play format.
The Englishman will be among the contenders who will be participating in the Volvo Match Play Championship, which starts from May 19. This match play event will be contested at the Finca Cortesin Golf Course in Spain.
This year, he won the WGC-Accenture Match Play by playing great golf against his opponents and completely dominated in a few matches. He successfully won the final against his fellow European Tour player Martin Kaymer.
After winning the Accenture Match Play, Donald jumped to a career high ranking at the third spot. He enjoys playing this format, as he thinks that he can perform better while facing an opponent.
During the Accenture Match Play Championships, he was never down in any of the matches against his opponent. His final match was against Kaymer, as he enjoyed a comfortable win having a score of three up with two holes to play.
Donald is also competing in this match play event in Spain and all the top three ranked players of the world will be among the contenders. World Number one Lee Westwood, Kaymer, who is ranked Number two followed by Donald at Number three, will all look to
capture the title in Spain.
The big hitting Jhonattan Vegas and Anders Hansen of Denmark have also confirmed their participation for this event. Vegas recently won his maiden PGA Tour title of the Bob Hope Classic in a play-off. Three more spaces are to be filled in this line-up.
The spots will be probably filled by one player from Asia, one from Australia and one spot is with the sponsor.
Donald, after confirming his participation in this event, said, "I have had a great start to the year in the States and now I am really looking forward to returning to play in Europe. I grew up watching the World Match Play Championship at Wentworth and
certainly dreamed of winning it as I watched so many of golf's legends battle it out over the years.”
The 33-year-old Donald is excited about competing in this event, as his Ryder Cup team-mates are also going to take part in this tournament.
Currently, Donald is enjoying good form with everything going right for him. He already has had a couple of top ten finishes, as he is playing the PGA Tour events. The Englishman also finished tied at the fourth spot at the Masters.
Volvo Match Play will be an exciting event as there will be a knockout stage after every round. Winner of this event will capture the lucrative prize money of £712,000.
