Luke Donald aims top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings – Golf News
Luke Donald is aiming to return to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings with a top-seven finish at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, slated to start from Thursday, April 26, 2012.
Donald lost his top spot following his disappointing performance in the RBC Heritage to hand over the place to Rory McIlroy.
“Is it a concern? No,” Donald said after the tournament. “Obviously, I'd have liked to have played a bit more consistently this year. I built it up nicely last year through tournaments and winning a bunch. As a result, there's a little bit of fluctuation
in the world rankings now”.
McIlroy decided to take some days off following his appearance in the Masters Tournament. Therefore, the top two positions in the OWGR are depending on Donald’s performance in each of the tournament he plays.
When Donald was competing in the RBC Heritage, he needed to finish in the top eight to retain his top spot.
During that time, McIlroy was enjoying his vacations back at home when he was informed that he became the new world number one.
Once again, McIlroy is taking the week off when Donald is getting ready to make another start on the PGA Tour.
Donald has played a total of six events on the 2012 PGA Tour season and earned two top-10 finishes.
His best performance was recorded in the Transitions Championship, where he defeated his rivals in the sudden death playoffs to take the first victory of the season.
Moreover, he tied for the sixth position in the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship; his second best of 2012.
Overall, his performance in the current season has been shaky, as he has not been able to perform as consistently as he did in 2011.
It was consistency that earned him several awards on the PGA and the European Tour, making him one of the greatest players in the world of golf.
Therefore, he needs to regain his focus and bring some consistency in the game if he wants to rule the world of golf without any fear.
McIlroy will return to the field to play in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. It is the same event that earned him the first professional victory of his career.
