Luke Donald bags yet another accolade, the European Tour Player of the Year
After achieving the unprecedented feat of soaring to the top of the Money Lists on both sides of the Atlantic and winning the PGA Tour Player of the Year award, World number one Luke Donald has pulled in another accolade for his already blistering feathery
cap of being nominated as the European Tour Player of the Year on Thursday, December 15.
The 34-year-old Englishman is the first English player to have won the PGA Tour Player of the Year award and his recent nomination on his home tour is one of his greatest achievements in his personal opinion.
“To have the accolade of European Tour Golfer of the Year means an awful lot to me and I will certainly look back on this year with a lot of fond memories,” Donald said.
Donald has been one of the awe inspiring players this year, wining several high profile events all over the world. He surged to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) after winning the BMW PGA Championship where he defeated the then world number
one Lee Westwood.
The award was a nail-biting contest among the top European players of the year including the US Open winner Rory McIlroy, Masters winner Charl Schwartzel and Open Champion Darren Clarke. The panel of judges included accomplished media men, sports journalists
and commentators besides the regular officials of the European Tour. Donald paid his tribute to his fellow compatriots, all of whom, unlike Donald, have gone over to win a major title.
“Rory’s win at Congressional was amazing as was Darren’s success in The Open, while Charl birdying the final four holes to win the Masters was a truly magical moment in golf,” Donald added. “Therefore, to be given the vote ahead of these great players who
also had great years is very special indeed.”
Donald has won twice on the European Tour including the BMW PGA Championship and the Barclays Scottish Open and twice on the PGA Tour including the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship and the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. Donald also has
one of the best putting average and the best Greens in Regulation average on both tours.
