Luke Donald bags yet another award, Golf Writers Trophy on the European Tour
Awards seem to be pouring in unabated for the world number one Luke Donald as the 34-year-old Englishman has now gone over to bag yet another accolade, the Golf Writers Trophy for 2011. After soaring to the top of the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic,
an unprecedented feat itself, Donald has done remarkably well in the year to surge to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) earlier in the year.
“Any award you win gives you a great amount of pleasure and for the Golf Writers to consider me as their player of the year means a lot, it really does,” Donald said. “These are the people who really understand golf and appreciate all that I have achieved
this year.”
The award, much like the European Tour Golfer of the Year award, was tightly contested by some of the rampaging European Tour player of the likes of Rory McIlroy the US Open winner, the Open winner Darren Clarke, Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and the
Solheim Cup wining Captain Alison Nicholas. Donald admitted that the contestants had more leverage as they had gone over to win major titles in the year and paid his gratitude to the panel of judges who selected him for the award.
“All the people in the running for the AGW award – Rory, Darren, the Solheim Cup team and the Walker Cup team – would have been worthy winners and therefore it is very gratifying to get the vote ahead of all of them.” He added.
All of the contestants paid rich tributes to Donald’s unprecedented feat. Clarke spoke on the occasion saying that Donald’s achievement is unbelievable and that he was full of admiration for the Englishman. He also lauded McIlroy’s wire-to-wire victory at
the US Open and regarded both the players as the strongest contenders of the trophy.
Captain Nicholas also congratulated the Englishman for the trophy and said that she was more than pleased that Solheim Cup team was even considered for the award. She lauded the success of the European Ladies Golf and said that the nomination itself shows
that the ladies golf has come a long way to claim its rightful share in the sport.
