Luke Donald close to becoming world number one golfer
Currently ranked number three in the world, Luke Donald has shot an amazing six under 65 to secure a one shot lead in the Heritage Tournament. If Donald is successful in maintaining his lead throughout the remaining two rounds, a victory could make him the
number one ranked player in the world. Taking place at Harbour Town Golf Links in the United States, The Heritage Tournament is part of the PGA Tour and the points gained from a win will see him through to the top spot.
The Englishman is currently at 10-under par, 132. Donald gave a decent performance in the second round of the Heritage Tournament. The Englishman opened with back to back birdies. The player kept the good play going as he carded another set of birdies on
the fifth, seventh and ninth hole making the turn at five under par. The back nine didn’t get off to a good start as the player posted a bogey. Donald, who also won the Accenture Match Play Championship, recovered by making birdies on the eleventh and fifteenth
hole.
The first round leader, Garrett Willis, birdied the eighteenth hole and is in second place at nine under. Colombian player Camilo Villegas, US Masters runner up Jason Day, defending champion Jim Furyk, and American player Chad Campbell are all tied for third
place at eight under par.
Luke Donald could displace Martin Kaymer if he wins the tournament. Kaymer’s top rank is in trouble from another side as. Lee Westwood, who is ranked number two, is also leading the Indonesian Masters in Indonesia. Donald is actually the highest ranked player
in the field at the Heritage Tournament, whose future could be in danger if the organizers fail to find a sponsor.
If Donald becomes number one, this could help the events popularity at keep it on the PGA tour schedule. As for Donald, becoming number one is not that big of a priority. Donald is more focused on his game and hoping to stay in the lead for the remaining
two rounds.
