Luke Donald commits to play in the Maybank Malaysian Open
The former world number one Luke Donald has committed to participate in the 2013 edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open, slated to start from March 21, 2013. The announcement about Donald’s participation in the event was made by the title sponsor, Maybank.
The tournament will be staged at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, Kuala Lumpur, offering a total prize fund of US$2.75 million, to the participants. Last year, the overall prize money for the tournament was US$2.5 million.
The Maybank Malaysian Open is lauded as the premier golf tournament of the country and the leading National Open in the region. The tournament is known for attracting a strong line-up each year.
This will be the first time that Donald will be performing in the tournament. Taking to the reporters, the current world number two expressed his plans to regain the world number one spot during the ongoing season. Rory McIlroy currently holds the number
one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Donald, who won both the money list titles on the PGA Tour and the European Tour in 2011, is the first major addition to the tournament this year.
While making the announcement about Donald’s confirmation, Maybank Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor, said that the Englishman’s addition to the tournament will provide a huge boost to the tournament.
“The confirmation of Luke Donald is indeed another boost for the Maybank Malaysian Open. Since we took over the title sponsorship of this tournament in 2006, we have endeavoured to bring world class golfing personalities to Malaysia,” he said.
According to him, Donald’s presence in the tournament will attract a huge crowd to visit the venue course and watch their favourite player performing live in front of them.
“Donald’s presence, like many other top players we have had in the past, will not only draw the crowd but also strengthen Malaysia’s standing in the global golfing map. Given the growing interest and spectator numbers at the Maybank Malaysian Open, we intend
to continue inspiring our local fans and golfers with the opportunity to see the world’s best on our greens,” he said.
