Luke Donald confirms his presence at the RBC Canadian Open
World number one Luke Donald has confirmed his appearance in the RBC Canadian Open, which will take place at the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club, in Vancouver, Canada from July 21-24, 2011. The Professional Golf Association (PGA)
Tour event has a total purse of $5,200,000 and 500 FedEx points to giveaway.
The news was confirmed by the Golf Canada, the promoter for the event, and the tournament director Bill Paul in a press conference held in Vancouver.
Paul said that Donald had his name registered for the tournament and he was enthused with the feeling of playing in a 102-year-old event.
Adding to his statement, Paul said that the world number one would be busy in the Open Championship, taking place at the St George Golf Club. Despite being stuck in a tight schedule, the Englishman had agreed to fly across the Atlantic
to play in the field, which would include Matt Kuchar, Paul Casey, Rickie Fowler, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, Anthony Kim, Sean O’Hair, Ben Crane, Lucas Glover, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Justin Leonard, Tim Clark, Charlie Hoffman, Ricky Barnes, Brandt
Snedeker and Ryan Moore and Hunter Mahan.
He also talked about the strength of the field, which had increased massively since 2005, when RBC Canadian Open last came to Shaughnessy.
Addressing the press conference, Paul said, “We feature 13 of this year’s PGA Tour winners. From the world golf rankings, we are at 19 of the top 50. We have 31 of the top 50 in FedEx Cup points and 29 of the top 50 in the current
PGA Tour money list.”
He further added, “We will also feature seven former Canadian Open champions. We have a few more challenges that we have stepped up to the plate on. I would think that we’re probably triple to what we were in 2008 and we’re certainly
greater than what we were in 2005.”
Included in the same field is the defending champion of the event, Carl Pettersson. According to Paul, the Swede is looking forward to welcome most of the top guns at Shaughnessy.
Pettersson lifted the trophy last year at Toronto’s St. Georges Golf Club. However, this year, the competition will be tougher owing to the presence of top punters of the world.
