Luke Donald considers the BMW PGA Championship a home-coming hoping to dislodge Rory McIlroy on OWGR
As the toughest trailblazers of golf are edging to tee-off at this week’s BMW PGA Championship at the revered Wentworth Club, many of the fans are asking the question of whether it will be another home-coming for the current world number two Luke Donald?
Donald who surged to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) last year, battling his way up in the Playoff drama against countryman Lee Westwood, is again hoping to clinch the coveted rank on the OWGR.
He will have to defend his title he won last year to topple the current world number one Rory McIlroy from the summit.
Donald was awarded a Lifetime Membership by the European Tour on Wednesday, May 22 by the tour chief executive George O’Grady, adding to his already long list of awards in short while.
Donald said, “I grew up just down the road, I had watched this tournament many times as a kid. Not just having the win on the line but also the title being Number One golfer in the world was very special”.
Despite of the fact that quite a few have criticised the changes made to the Wentworth course by Ernie Els, Donald believes that the changes have helped him immensely to perform well on the course for consecutive appearances.
He is also hoping to have a brilliant weekend over the course given the weather updates for the moment.
He added, “It's always a great week, and especially when you have a weather forecast like this. I'm excited to be back here. Since the changes, I've performed well around this golf course and I think any time you're coming back to a place with such good
memories”.
Some 14 major-winners along with three top players in the world will be part of the field, wrestling to bag the lucrative title on the tour.
Many of the players are also eager to perform better in order to gain maximum points on the money list and get a chance to be part of the 12-member Ryder Cup squad later in the season.
Donald is a mere few points short of McIlroy to regain the summit of the OWGR and a strong performance can actually jolt him right back in the driving seat.
