Luke Donald disappointed with PGA’s decision to delay Player of the Year accolade
The latest decision by the PGA Tour to extend the Player of the Year bid till the end of the WGC HSBC Championship is seen by the current world number one Luke Donald as attempt to undermine his selection for the accolade. The decision was scheduled to come
out after the last of the Fall Series event, the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, where Donald posted another thrilling victory, his second on the PGA Tour for the current year, comfortably qualifying for the POY title but will now have to wait
for another week till the decision is finally made by the tour officials.
Although Donald is not the only one who has won twice on the tour this year, his consistent performance in his 19 appearances speaks volumes of his good form and gives him the edge over other hopefuls for the title.
“I think the decision to add HSBC is sketchy at best. Why change the rule the day after Disney? It doesn’t really make sense to me,” Donald said on “Morning Drive” on Tuesday. “To be honest, everything needs to be simplified for the PGA Tour. There doesn’t
seem to be a beginning and an end. You finish the FedEx Cup and you think the season’s over. Then you have the Fall Series and you think it’s over. Then they’re adding another event,” he said.
Donald was leading the FedExCup Money List for a considerably longer period of time until Webb Simpson dislodged him from the summit with his consecutive strong performances. Already on top of the Race to Dubai Money List on the European Tour, Donald needed
to summit the FedExCup List again to pull in the unprecedented double-dip on both sides of Atlantic. He is n now all set to achieve the milestone but there is a strong chance he would lose the POY title if incase either of Simpson or the PGA Championship winner
Keegan Bradley goes all the way to win the HSBC Championship.
The 33-year-old Englishman also laid claim to the coveted Vardon Trophy on Monday, achieving the highest scoring average of 68.86 against the nearest competitor Simpson standing at 69.25 and the highest ranked American player Steve Stricker at 69.36.
