Luke Donald eager to clinch his first major title at Masters next month
World number one Luke Donald is eager to start off his eighth bid of the coveted Masters at the Augusta National next month, hoping to clinch the first major title of his otherwise grizzled career.
Donald is among some of the highly respected English golfers who have not been able to bag a major title in their careers.
The list includes the likes of former world number one Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie.
Donald reclaimed his world number one throne a few weeks ago from the rampaging young gun Rory McIlroy and is currently poised at the top.
Donald was not able to control the raging Charl Schwartzel who birdied the final four holes to clinch the title and posted his second strongest Masters finish, a joint fourth.
Donald recalled, "If I was a spectator at last year’s Masters, I would have loved to have either been there or watching it on TV".
"As a player, hearing all those roars coming down the back nine was so exciting for me. I was playing with Bo [Van Pelt], and he was making a couple eagles and I was making a few birdies of my own".
He lamented his reckless shot on the 12th, which ultimately caused him to slip back on the leaderboard, denying him the green jacket.
He added, “It was probably the only bad swing I made all day. But I was proud of the way I dug in deep and hopefully I can put myself into contention to win again this year”.
Donald, however, is not the only top-ranked player eager to bag the title for the first time in his grizzled career. He will be facing challengers like Rory McIlroy who led the opening three rounds last year.
Also on the field, will be countryman Westwood in search of his first major title and a resurging Tiger Woods who is aiming to clinch the fifth green jacket of his stellar career.
Donald has another two strong finishes in the event when he finished for a joint third in 2005, on his debut in the event and a joint 10th in 2008.
