Luke Donald eager to return to his favourite hunting ground The BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth
World number two and former world number one Luke Donald is hoping to reinvent his majestic Playoff victory at the upcoming BMW PGA Championship, thereby regaining the top slot that he lost to the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy a few weeks ago.
Donald is currently trailing the young prodigy by a slight difference and a victory at his favourite hunting ground will see him clinch back his top position on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Played at the scenic and historic Wentworth Club, BMW PGA Championship is considered as Europe’s own brand of unofficial major event on the calendar of the European Tour and is often seen colliding with the star-studded Players Championship on the PGA.
Donald said, "The BMW PGA Championship is the best event we play outside the Majors on The European Tour. Obviously the Majors come first. Those are the events I'm looking to try to win at the top of the list, but Wentworth isn’t far behind".
"For me it has a special, personal feeling too, because I grew up so close to it. I came as a kid a few times to watch and I have some special memories having won there as well. There's a sentimental factor".
Donald soared to the top of the OWGR last year here at Wentworth when he took over the then world number one Lee Westwood for the top slot.
The duo had finished the final 18-hole stretch for a tie and while Westwood found a water hazard close to the green, Donald shot an excellent approach shot to land the title.
Overjoyed with the prospects of being world number one, Donald embraced his wife and daughter on the green.
He pulled in several strong finishes and victories for the rest of the year to sustain his rank on the OWGR before he was finally overthrown by McIlroy at the start of this year.
Donald’s stellar performance in the last year saw him bag the money leader on both sides of the Atlantic, a feat which remains unprecedented in the history of the sport.
BMW PGA Championship will kick off next month before heading into the second major of the year, The US Open in San Francisco.
