Luke Donald has expressed his pleasure for being in contention with Rory McIlroy for the top position in the OWGR (Official World Golf Rankings) as they will play head-to-head in various events in upcoming months.
McIlroy replaced Donald for the first time in his career to take the first position in the world rankings, following his win in the Honda Classic.
Thereafter, the see-saw game continued, with Donald taking back the spot and then losing it all over again.
Currently, McIlroy is enjoying the top position for the third time but the golf fans do want some kind of drama, flaring from changes in the positions.
It has been witnessed that both the players have taken the benefit of each other’s absence to trigger their own rankings.
When Donald lost the place for the first time to McIlroy, he participated in the Transitions Championship and earned a victory to get back on the top.
Recently, McIlory took advantage of Donald’s absence from the Wells Fargo Championship and became the best golfer with a second-place finish at Quail Hollow.
"I kind of enjoy the going back and forth. I think the fans enjoy it," Donald said, while talking to the media at TPC Sawgrass, where he is scheduled to contend for the Players Championship.
"I think the last couple of months it probably has not been as exciting because Rory and I really haven't been playing in the same events,” he added.
“I think that will change a little bit and hopefully there will be some situations coming up in the next few months where we'll be playing in the same tournament and both having a chance to win the tournament”.
He said that it will be more exciting to watch him along with McIlroy to be playing head-to-head in the same events, which will make the changes in the rankings more relevant for golf fans.
This time, at the Players Championship, Donald, McIlroy and Lee Westwood would be trying their best to prove themselves as the best in the world of golf.
Either one of them taking a reasonable margin over the other two would notch the top position in the world rankings.
