Luke Donald eyeing a major win at the US Open
The world number one Luke Donald is headed to the Olympic Club in order to participate in the US Open, with the aim of adding a major win to his resume this time.
Donald has no doubt been the hottest sensation on both the PGA and European Tours for more than one year and he also won both the PGA Tour as well as the European Tour money list.
This year, he has once again recorded wins on both the tours, which has helped him remain on top of the world rankings even after McIlroy took the spot thrice this year.
According to Donald, it does not matter to him to be number one. He believes that a major victory is much more important than being the top ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings.
He has top-5 finishes in all the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship and the Open Championship (British Open).
However, he has yet to record a top-10 finish in the US Open, which is considered as the toughest major event of the year.
He told a media conference, on Tuesday, that he is mainly focused on bringing some positive changes in his game that may help him gain some confidence during the second major event of the year.
"It doesn't really, whether I'm ranked number one or ranked number 10 or 20 or 100, it doesn't change the way I prepare or the way I practice," he said.
"The focus for me is to continually try and improve and get better in all facets of my game and that has no relevance to where my world ranking is".
"The only other slight distraction, which is less so for me because I kind of go under the radar, is as a number one ranked player is that there's more, a little bit more attention, a little bit more expectation," he added.
In 2006, he tied for the 12th spot at the US Open, which was his best finish in the event. Thereafter, he never succeeded to break the 45th mark on the leaderboard, which makes him a little worried while entering the elite filed at
the Olympic Club.
