Luke Donald eyes hat-trick at the BMW PGA Championship – Golf news
Luke Donald has set his sights on becoming the second player in the history of the BMW PGA Championship, to record a hat-trick of wins, when he tees off this week at the Wentworth Club, on May 23, 2013.
Currently, Colin Montgomerie is only player who achieved this feat by winning the European Tour’s flagship tournament consecutive three times, in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
In 2011, the English star battled against Lee Westwood, in the sudden-death playoffs, to claim his first victory in the event, which also allowed him to grab €750,000 first prize, along with the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Last year, he successfully defended his title in style, by claiming an emphatic four-stroke victory, which once again allowed him to surge to the top spot in the world rankings.
“To come and defend and get back to number one is very sweet indeed,” said Donald after his sixth victory in 15 months worldwide. “I take a great amount of satisfaction. It means I am doing the right things and the hard work is paying off.”
This year, he will not be able to make it to the top of the rankings, yet, he still has something really important to achieve.
Martin Kaymer, in the meantime, is also relishing the opportunity of playing, along with his 10 other Ryder Cup team members, in the tournament.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in getting an opportunity to meet all his Ryder Cup teammates in Virginia Water.
“Hopefully we are going to play together, that would be really nice,” he said. “We were talking about The Ryder Cup already in the weeks before, in the months before this event and I'm really happy that everybody showed up.”
Kaymer’s last victory came at the Nedbank Golf Challenge at the end of the last year. He now believes that the time has now come to add another title to his resume, by stunning his opponents at the BMW PGA Championship.
“I feel very confident,” he said. “And it's just a matter of time that I will win.”
