Luke Donald has a word of advice for Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy – Golf news
The 33-year-old Englishman, who rattled the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) right from the start of the year, is now all set to pull one of the rarest feats in the history of sport. Luke Donald, the current World Number One is hoping not only to win
this week’s final leg of the FedExCup challenge but is also aiming to bag the Race to Dubai Championship on the European Tour. Being a member of both the tours, Donald is eligible to play on both the events as he is also one of the leading players in terms
of money earned.
Notwithstanding that, on his mind for the moment, is next year’s Ryder Cup where he has already played thrice in his stellar career. Donald said, “It’s a big deal to be eligible for the Ryder Cup. I’ve had three great experiences and, obviously if I don’t
play on the European Tour, I’m not eligible for that. Until I feel like my game isn’t good enough to be a part of that team, I will probably continue to be a member of both tours.”
Donald had a whirlwind season this year, where he landed several professional titles playing on both tours. The Englishman was a grossly underrated player at the start of the year and many top players of the sport considered him ‘luke’, as his name. He clinched
the first title of the year, the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship at Tucson Arizona and went over to post three top-five finishes en route to the summit of the OWGR.
Donald admits that on several occasions he felt as if he has overdone his commitment with the sport. For new aspiring players, Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy, both of whom have shown signs of playing on both tours next year, Donald has a word of advice,
“It’s going to be hectic. It’s going to be busier than you would like. And to be successful on both, you have to play well in the majors and WGCs that count toward both.”
McIlroy is reconsidering his options after his lacklustre performance on the Open Championship this year, where he succumbed to the treacherous Links Course. He retreated from his earlier remark where he had vowed to the European Tour in all circumstances
and came out a few months ago, about a possible membership of the PGA tour.
Not being part of the PGA, the duo is not playing at the $10-million FedExCup Playoff Championship. The FedExCup challenge will conclude this week with the final leg The Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. Donald finished for a joint fourth in the
last leg of the event.
