Luke Donald in lead going into final round of The Heritage Open – Golf news
Englishman Luke Donald will head into the final round of the Heritage Open leading by one stroke.
Currently ranked number three, Donald is looking for victory in this PGA Tour event taking place at Harbour Town Golf Links in order to be number one.
The player overcame a poor opening round by maintaining the lead in the second and third rounds. With defending champion Jim Furyk hovering behind Donald, the competition will surely be intense.
Things did not start very good for the player during the third round. Donald made a par on the first hole followed by a double bogey on the second hole. Posting birdies on the fifth and seventh holes made things better for the Accenture Match Play Championship
winner, but a bogey on the eighth hampered his progress.
The 33-year-old however recovered with another birdie on the ninth. On the back-nine, Donald was playing it safe and only made a birdie on the 16th hole to finish the day with a one under par. Even though the third round performance by the Englishman
was not as impressive as the 65 in the second round, it still kept Donald in the lead at eleven under par overall.
“Obviously I got off to a pretty slow start, making 7 on 2,” said Donald. “I dug deep. Made some good birdies. It was tougher today, the wind was more of a factor, the greens are getting firmer and crustier. And I was pleased with bringing it back after
that slow start.”
Donald does have a lot at stake since a victory here could move him past Lee Westwood and world number one player Martin Kaymer. Westwood triumphed in Indonesia and is only waiting on the final round of The Heritage tournament to celebrate being number one
again.
As for the defending champion Furyk, he had managed to take lead on the front-nine after making birdies on the third and fifth holes. Two bogeys on the 12th and 18th holes however strained the player’s position again and put him in
second place.
With only a thin margin and so much at stake, the final round of the Heritage Open will surely be an interesting one to follow.
