Luke Donald interested in ‘Player of the Year’ accolade rather then $10-million of FedExCup Playoffs
World Number One, Luke Donald is making all the right moves for the moment and is hoping to pull in another victory on the PGA Tour this year, to win the ‘Player of the Year’ accolade. The Englishman is now headed straight into the FedExCup Playoff Championship
final event, the Tour Championship at East lake Golf Club on Sunday, September 25, and insists that winning the whooping $10-million prize money is the last thing on his mind.
The 33-year-old said, “I'm not really thinking about the money. I'm really more concentrating on winning the tournament, picking up another trophy, winning the FedExCup, hopefully winning Player of the Year that comes with it. Where I am in my career, I
have been very fortunate. (I've won) $25 million or something.”
Currently poised at Number Four on the FedExCup points table, Donald is hoping to go all the way to the summit of the coveted title and extend his lead on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) to a colossal scale. He is already way ahead of the trailing,
Lee Westwood, on the OWGR with his consecutive strong performances on both sides of the Atlantic.
Donald started off the year with a victory at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona, and posted a runner-up finish at the Heritage and Bridgestone Invitational. He finished tied for third and fourth at the Deutsche Bank Championship
and the Masters, respectively. He crossed over to his home turf and won the Scottish Open this year at Castle Stuart and the BMW World Championship.
Previously considered an average putter who was considerably short in his drives, he has worked tirelessly to earn the reputation he has now, but is still in search of his first major victory, much like his countryman, Westwood.
Donald admitted, “The number one goal at the beginning of this year was to try and compete, be in contention for majors.”
Donald also has played continuously throughout the season, without taking any breaks and at one time he admitted that he felt over-played and weary. Starting off last week at the BMW Championship in Cog Hill, Donald stumbled with an opening round of 75,
and gradually worked his way up to finish for a 12-under, tied for fourth.
The Tour Championship will boost of top-30 players on the field who have qualified on the points table and the money earned. The ranking and qualification system is designed so that it would complement the players who have played most part of the season
on the PGA Tour, and have actually gone to win one or two titles in the course. Steve Stricker is the top ranked American followed by Dustin Johnson.
