Luke Donald leads rain suspended US Open – Golf news
Luke Donald of England held a one-stroke lead over Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott, midway through the opening round of the second major golf championship of the season, the US Open, before the inclement weather forced the game to be suspended, on Thursday,
June 13, 2013.
Last weekend, it heavily rained at the Merion Golf Club, making the course surface soft, which, according to the players, completely changed the difficulty level of the course. After another spell of rain at Merion on Thursday, it may now become further
easy for the players to attack the pins and post low scores.
Donald started with birdies on two of the first three holes that he played, followed by a lost shot on the fifth hole. Entering the back nine of the course, he was one-under for the round.
The back nine of the course also witnessed him making a stunning start, as he recording three straight birdies, starting from the 11th hole, before he had to move to the clubhouse due to poor weather conditions.
“I birdied my last three holes, 11, 12, 13. Those are kind of the holes you want to make an easy score if you can,” said Donald. “Obviously the weather conditions are making the course a lot softer, and you can attack the pins a little bit more. It's playing
as gentle as it might play so far, and obviously this afternoon not much wind.”
“If you were going to make a score, today was a good day. I've obviously got five holes left and five pretty tough ones to finish, but really happy with the way I started my round,” he added.
Donald is among the players who have gained a lot of fame in the past few years due to their stunning performances in different parts of the world.
In 2011, the Englishman became the first player in the history of the game to win money title on both the European Tour and the PGA Tour, courtesy of his four victories, along with a number of top 10 finishes during the season.
The same season also saw him surging to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings. After achieving so much in the past few years, he still has to taste success in any major golf championship.
He now believes that the time has come when he will soon be added to the circle of major champions. For that purpose, he plans to remain consistent in the remaining three rounds at Merion.
