Luke Donald loses top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings – Golf News
After failing to place his name among the top eight of the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links, Luke Donald has slipped to the second place in the Official World Golf Rankings.
This automatically puts Rory McIlroy back on the first place. He was enjoying a week off with his girlfriend, Caroline Wozniacki, after the Masters Tournament finished at the Augusta National Golf Club.
McIlroy surged to the top of the rankings for the first time in his career following his win in the Honda Classic last month.
However, Donald reclaimed his crown of being the number one with a victory in the Transitions Championship when McIlroy was resting prior to the Masters.
However, McIlroy’s consistent performance in the past one year paid off even when he was on a vacation in Denmark. Donald’s poor performance in the RBC Heritage further affected the top ranking.
Donald started the tournament with a 75 in the opening round of the event, followed by an impressive 69 on Friday.
However, an even par 71 in the third round placed him at the 52nd place on the leaderboard while entering the final round of the tournament.
A double bogey on the par-four first hole against two birdies took him to the 37th position at the end of the tournament.
After losing the top spot in the OWGR, Donald said that he does not care much about the ranking. “Now that I've been No 1 for a few weeks, it's not something I think about too much," he said with a shrug.
McIlroy now plans to return to the field with an appearance at the Wells Fargo Championship, where he registered the first win of his career on the American soil.
McIlroy is eyeing a strong comeback, especially after a poor display of game in the Masters Tournament.
He is currently listed on top of the Race to Dubai Rankings. Louis Oosthuizen, who registered a win in the Malaysian Open, after a playoff loss in the Masters Tournament, secures second place.
Oosthuizen lost to Bubba Watson on the second extra hole in the playoffs at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Yet, he did not lose his confidence and flew to Kuala Lumpur, where he earned his second victory of the 2012 golf season.
