Luke Donald makes way to Riviera with the badge of No.1
Following a journey for seven difficult years, World No. 1 Luke Donald can proudly say that he has fulfilled his vision and ambition of landing at the Riviera golf course as the top golfer of the world.
Not long ago, he dreamt of accommodating himself within the best 10 of the world.
For many, it was tantamount to a joke, especially at a time when the mainstream of golf was being dominated by players like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els.
He makes his way at Riviera for the Northern Trust Open where he has been staying for a couple of days after he was able to secure a convincing victory at the European PGA Tour.
Surprisingly, he is making his debut in this event. With the kind of reputation he has, his debut can mark an unending series of wins at this event.
After securing the Player of the Year Award in 2011 for both US and Euro PGA Tours, and then defeating the then number one Martin Kaymer, makes his record unquestionable about winnings.
Coupled with an aggression filled return at the Disney Open to override Webb Simpson on the money list, he is definitely a strong contender on the field.
“He’s still under the radar,” said Pat Goss, Donald’s coach at Northwestern. “He’s probably the most anonymous No. 1 player ever”.
According to Donald, the position he has been able to acquire and maintain in the world of golf is primarily an outcome of the golf he has played throughout all these years.
“The best part about being No. 1 knows that my best golf was good enough to get me to there,” Donald said.
Apart from the performances he has delivered at golf courses, Donald regards the role of his coach Pat as being pivotal is helping him realise the talent and potential he has to tee it off in the most exceptional way.
However, in terms of competition, Donald’s getting off the mark at Riviera will be challenged by fan favourite Fred Couples, who will try to make it for the third time.
He was last able to win in 1992 and 1994. They will also be accompanied with the 2011 PGA Tour rookie of the year Keegan Bradley.
