Luke Donald misses another major title chance at the US Open – Golf news
Luke Donald once again had finish a major golf championship without being his name on top of the leaderboard, as he faltered for a five-over par 75 in the final round of the US Open to finish tied for the eighth position on the leaderboard, on Sunday, June
16, 2013.
The second major of the season was being staged at the Merion Golf Club, a course that did not allow even a single player to break the par at the end of the week.
Donald, who is one of the best players in the world these days, courtesy of his brilliant performances in the past few years, has yet to win a major in his career.
Last week, he certainly had the opportunity to add one to his tally, as he entered the final round trailing the leader by just two strokes.
As per the final scores, he only needed a one-under par score to force the game to enter into the playoffs. However, the Englishman failed to mount a title charge and went back home empty handed.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website on Monday, Donald looked quite disappointed on missing out another chance of recording a major title victory. At the same time, he also praised the way his playing partner, Justin Rose, played in the tournament
and secured his maiden victory in majors.
“I think Justin for the last few years has been known as one of the best ball strikers in the game -he showed that today,” he said. “To win a US Open, you have to have ultimate control of your golf ball. He did that. He hit some really clutch iron shots
down the stretch, just a pure iron into 15.”
“I’m sure it's going to be emotional for him. He obviously lost his father a few years ago, and I'm sure that little sign up to the sky was for his dad,” he added. “I'm very happy for him.”
Despite faltering in the final moments of the tournament, Donald believes his overall performance in the tournament was really good and it will boost his morale for the remaining two major championships of the season.
