Luke Donald moves to second place in world rankings
The Accenture Match Play Championship winner, Luke Donald has made his way to second place in world rankings after finishing tied for fourth at Golf's richest tournament, the Players Championship. Current World Number 1, Lee Westwood did not participate
in the Players Championship that took place in Florida last week. This finish was Donald’s seventh Top-10 in a row and hence enabled him to surpass Martin Kaymer in the world rankings.
The player played decently giving his best round in the second day when he carded a five under par 67. Posting consecutive 71s in the third and fourth round, Donald was ten under par over all to finish in a joint fourth place with Nick Watney.
Just ten years ago, there was only one English player in the Top-100 ranks and now, the top two spots are occupied by Englishmen. Luke Donald as of right now is the most consistent player in the world of golf. His great form started last September when the
player was runner up to Jim Furyk at the Tour Championship. After that tournament, the player has only finished outside the Top-10 once in a total of thirteen tournaments.
At the Heritage Tournament in South Carolina, Donald lost very narrowly as he was defeated in a playoff by Brandt Snedeker. With him loosing, Westwood reclaimed his top spot from Martin Kaymer.
Now Donald is eyeing the Volvo World Match Play which is scheduled to take place at the Finca Cortesin Golf Club. The tournament, which has five of the world’s top six players competing, is the perfect platform for Donald to dethrone Westwood. Donald will
open against American player Ryan Moore and Westwood will play against Anders Hansen of Denmark, and Martin Kaymer will face Y.E Yang.
"My confidence is high right now," Donald said after his tie for fourth at last week's Players Championship on the PGA Tour. "I've been playing very consistent now for a good six months. Obviously I enjoy match play. My record is very good at match play."
