Luke Donald: no more the world number one
After the 2012 U.S. PGA Champion this weekend, which took place on the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the Ocean Course, Luke Donald is not the number one player in the official golf ranking.
After the four-day event, which started on the 9th of August, Donald has fallen down to the number 2 spot.
The English professional golfer is the only player who has been on the number one spot for such a long time and has not been able to bag a major title. At this major event, he was looking to bag his career’s first major title but failed to do so.
Donald had a pretty bad tournament. On the first day, he managed to card three bogeys and one double bogey. He also registered three birdies, which made his score two-over par for the day.
The second day was even worse. He scored five bogeys and one double bogey. He also managed to score three birdies which made his score four-over par for the round.
The third round was again similar to the first one. In it, he scored four birdies and four bogeys. The score was level till then but in the end, he carded a double bogey.
This made his score two-over par for the day. His total score rose to eight-over par. At that time, he was tied at the 64th spot.
Luke Donald completely turned his game around on the last day. The last one was the best day for the player. He carded four birdies and only a single bogey on the front nine. On the back nine he carded three more birdies.
At the end of the tournament, Donald had a score of two-over par and ended with a tied thirty second position.
This was a truly disappointing performance for the former world number one. Now he would be looking to bounce back in the majors, which will be coming next year. Meanwhile, he will also be looking to regain his number one spot.
In an interview Luke Donald said, “I've won twice this year but I look at this year as somewhat of a disappointment in terms of the majors. You always gear your season up to peak at these events and I haven't quite figured that out yet”.
