Luke Donald not giving up hope of reaching number one spot – Golf news
Luke Donald has not given up hope on chasing down the number one spot just yet. Ranked World Number three, Donald did not manage to maintain his lead in the final round and hence didn’t win the Heritage Tournament on April 24th. Being really close
to dethroning German Martin Kaymer, Donald still has a chance of achieving the goal.
With the Zurich Classic of the PGA Tour taking place in New Orleans this coming weekend, Donald is eager to tee-off. The Englishman will face talented players like Graeme McDowell, Steve Stricker and Nick Watney in Louisiana this week. After getting beaten
in a play-off by Brandt Snedeker, Donald has not lost hope and will fight until he achieves his goal.
“It would be something great to talk to the grandkids in 30 years' time and say that you were the best in the world, but I still have a lot of chances to do that," said the 33-year-old.
Since Donald lost, Kaymer’s top spot was given to Lee Westwood as he became the number one ranked player again. Westwood, who won the Indonesian Masters last Sunday, had been number one for 17 weeks when he dethroned Tiger Woods last year. Where Donald is
eager to be number one, Westwood is determined to not let go of his rank for the second time.
Luke Donald has showcased some amazing performance in 2011. His good work is evident from the amount of ranking points gained this year. Donald gained 151.48 points which is 33 more points than his rival Kaymer. When the ranking was up for grabs by both
Donald and Westwood, the general vote was for Donald. This was due to the consistency the player has been showing in his game over the course of the year.
Donald won the Accenture Match Play Championship earlier this year in February as he defeated Kaymer in the final round. In the Heritage tournament as well, the player maintained his lead but unfortunately couldn’t make it through to the play-off. The player
is grouped with KJ Choi and Ryder Cup team-mate McDowell in the opening two rounds of the coming tournament. Seeing Donald’s determination, the Zurich Classic will surely be an interesting one to follow.
