Luke Donald opts for detente after his reckless comments on Tiger Woods
World number one Luke Donald has decided to back track yet again from his comments he made on Wednesday, December 7 when he lauded Rory McIlroy as the most talented player on the sports arena for the moment and went over to even call him more talented than Tiger Woods. Donald and McIlroy are now locked in a stiff battle in Dubai at the Dubai World Championship, the season-ending event on the European Tour calendar.
Donald said on Wednesday. "I think Tiger's work ethic has always been tremendous and his mindset as well. But in terms of talent, I think Rory has more talent."
Probably later realizing the depth of his comments, Donald quickly reverted to the detente saying that Woods has always been the greatest player he ever had a chance to play with.
“A few people aren't understanding what I meant. The word 'talent' and Rory, to me, means a free-flowing swing who makes everything look so easy," Donald tweeted. "TW (Woods) has always been the best at getting the ball in the hole when it mattered the most. That's not just talent that something else, too."
34-year-old Englishman’s comments have come at a time when Woods is experiencing a rare resurgence in his career, and many have cited his return as another promising era for the sport especially for the year 2012. Woods played remarkably well in the Australian Open and the President’s Cup in Australia, and finally went over to card his first professional victory at the Chevron World Challenge at the Sherwood Country Club after a lapse of two years.
Being on top of the OWGR for the longest period of time, Woods has resurged as a potent threat to the rest for the aspiring players in the sport and has all the capability to again surge to the top. He has now climbed back to 21st on the OWGR after a disappointing fall out of the top-50.
Donald, Who is currently leading the Money Lists on both sides of the Atlantic as well as the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) is pitched to save his position on the Race to Dubai Money List which will make him the only player in the history to top both Money Lists at the end of the calendar year.
McIlroy, meanwhile, is still hot on his heels, carding back to back victories on both sides of the Atlantic. Winner of the US Open this year, the young Irishman is one of the finest discoveries in the sport for the moment and is hoping to topple Donald from the Race to Dubai Money List for all the good reasons. He is currently ranked number two on the OWGR and needs at least runners up finish to overcome the €789,789 deficit to top the list. Donald, on the other hand needs a humble top-nine to retain his ground.
