Luke Donald reveals he loves to beat Lee Westwood more than any other player in the world
In a surprise statement issued by the world number two Luke Donald, the Englishman has revealed that he likes to beat his nemesis and countryman Lee Westwood more than any other player in the world.
The duo, who have also been partners in several Ryder Cups, have been at loggerheads with each other for almost a year after Donald went over to dethrone Westwood from the top slot on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), last year.
Westwood 38, who performed well throughout the start of the 2011 season, fell for a disastrous water hazard on the first Playoff hole at BMW PGA Championship, losing his world number one title that he had regained from Germany’s Martin Kaymer.
The event will be returning to the scenic Wentworth club in May where the duo will be seen again locking horns for the coveted title.
Donald’s statement may come as a surprise as the 34-year-old Englishman rarely ever churns out controversial statements.
He said, “Who better to take down than the Number One player? And the fact he happened to be British and English, that made that one much more satisfying”.
Donald lost his world number title after a continuous run of 40 weeks on the top of the OWGR.
He was overpowered by the raging Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy at the start of the current season. Donald temporarily regained the title afterwards, only to lose it again to the young gun.
For the moment, McIlroy should have been a bigger concern for the Englishman but he insists that there is nothing more satisfying than to defeat the countryman Westwood.
He added, “If I’d been going against a lesser name, the win still would have been special, but in terms of going head to head with Lee, it was a special one. Right now we have so many guys who are ranked highly. We are always trying to get one over the other”.
While Donald plays on both tours, crossing the Atlantic no less than a dozen times in a year, Westwood has earned most of his European Tour titles on the Asian Turf where he plays like an almighty giant.
Despite of their otherwise stellar careers, none of them have been able to bag a major title as yet and will be hoping to do the same in current season.
