Luke Donald sets his sights on winning the BMW PGA Championship for the third straight time
Luke Donald of England has set his sights on winning the BMW PGA Championship for the third time in a row, when the European Tour event kicks off at the Wentworth Club, on May 23, 2013.
In 2011, the world number two outshined Lee Westwood in the sudden-death playoffs to raise the trophy for the first time in his career.
The same season also witnessed the Englishman surging to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings, thanks to his another four victories in 2011.
In addition to that, he also became the first player in the history of the game to win the money list titles on both the European Tour and the US PGA Tour in the same season.
The 2012 golf season saw him losing the world number one spot to Rory McIlroy. However, the 35-year-old still managed to successfully defend his title at the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship
With that win, he became the third player in the history of the players’ flagship event to record victories in two straight years.
Colin Montgomerie and Sir Nick Faldo were the other two players to achieve the feat during their careers.
The Englishman now plans to join Montgomerie, who won the Volvo PGA Championship for three straight years – he won the event in 1998, 1999 and 2000 – by recording another victory at the Wentworth Club next year.
“Obviously the BMW PGA Championship is The European Tour’s flagship event and to win it back-to-back was very special for me,” said Donald. “It will be a great honour to go there and try to do what Monty did”.
He added, “It’s a huge event on The European Tour schedule and the West Course is one that suits my game very well. I’ll be going there with high expectations of trying to emulate the great Colin Montgomerie”.
There is still plenty of time left, before the players’ flagship event tees off in Virginia Water in Surrey, England. Therefore, it will be difficult to predict whether Donald will be able to defend his title.
However, the golf commentators believe that Donald certainly has the potential to achieve that feat, especially when the tournament will be held near his home town.
Donald, who grew up in Buckinghamshire, said that he spent his childhood watching world’s best players contending against each other at the Wentworth Club.
He also stated that the West Course at the venue golf club suits his style of playing golf. Therefore, he will have a considerable advantage over his competitors in the tournament.
“The West Course is one that suits my game very well. I’ll be going there with high expectations of trying to emulate the great Colin Montgomerie,” he said.
