Luke Donald snatches number one spot, surges past Rory McIlroy again
Luke Donald has snatched the world number one position from Rory McIlroy after he won the European Tour event, the BMW PGA Championship.
The 34-year-old Englishman shot a 15-under 273 at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. He regained the dominating position at the Official World Golf Rankings from McIlroy, who missed the cut in the second round.
“It's been going back and forth a little bit. Rory's turn next week. It was a little bit of a motivation to try to play well today,” said Donald. “There's something sweet about going 12 months and still being No. 1. It's an indication that I'm doing the
right things”.
Donald displayed an amazing performance in the four-day tournament. He scored enormously, cheering all his fans for winning the title again and regaining the leading position.
"What a great event to defend at," Donald said. "To get back to No. 1, as a side note, is very sweet. "I putted well all week. I certainly felt some of the pressure going out as the leader but I got the job done and I'm very pleased about it".
McIlroy, the 23-year-old Northern Irish professional, missed the cut in the second round of the tournament. He was unable to face the competition and scored poorly in England.
He shot a 2-over 74 in the first round and put himself in trouble. Then in the second round, he again displayed a mediocre performance and shot a 7-under 79 on Friday. His final two rounds scores were 9-over 153.
Since January, Donald and McIlroy have competed for the top position. It was the Honda Classic on March 4, a PGA Tour event, when McIlroy became the world number one for the first time.
Donald defeated McIlroy, after winning the Transitions Championship on March 18. However, Donald was unable to maintain his position, as he played a poor game at the Masters Tournament and RBC Heritage.
After facing tough resistance from McIlroy, Donald finally achieved the leading position. Donald has to perform well throughout the year to maintain the position.
McIlroy is now on the second position. He only needs one win to be on the top again. Both are playing and competing well against each other.
