Luke Donald takes a dig at Tiger Woods before the BMW Championship on FedExCup Playoffs
World number one Luke Donald, otherwise known for his relatively quite disposition, has finally decided to switch over to an aggressive mode of Tiger bashing and came out with his unusual comments where he regarded Tiger Woods’ return to his former glory,
an unexpected possibility.
The Englishman, who is now into his third month on top of the summit of Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), is crouching for the third leg of the FedExCup Playoff Championship and is hoping to clinch the lucrative $10-million title at the end of the fourth
event. A battered Woods could not qualify for the championship due to his disappointing figures on the FedExCup points table.
"When you get that combination of injury plus the scandal that went on, mentally that's quite scarring. It's a lot to take, even for someone with one of the strongest minds in golf. It's a confidence thing." Donald was quoted as saying, "Even though Tiger's
only 35, there are a lot of young guys coming up now - Rory McIlroy and Keegan Bradley and a bunch of others. I tend to think a new era is upon us. The Tiger era is over."
The comments will definitely not go down well with the Tiger camp and a possible retaliation of Donald’s assessment is quite likely in a few weeks. Donald has performed well in the opening events of the FedExCup challenge at the Barclays as well as the Deutsche
Bank Championship played at the TPC Boston and has stayed in contention for the third event, the BMW Championship at Cog Hill Country Club.
Donald and Lee Westwood both have now spent considerable time on top of the summit but have still to win a major title in their careers. On the contrary, the man who has been a target of reckless comments from all nooks and corners, has bagged a massive
14 major titles in his career so far and is still in the run for more.
But the Englishmen can hardly be blamed for their outburst against Woods. The 35-year-old single handedly kept the whole European entourage at bay and stayed on top of the world for the longest period of time in the history of the sport.
Donald also expressed his grief over not having won a major title in his career and admitted at the same time that he can never achieve what Woods have been able to achieve in his career. He also commended Rory McIlroy’s stellar performance in the US Open
where he went all the way to win the title and wished if he could swap his number one position and all his accolades with McIlroy’s US Open title.
Only Top 70 players were able to move over to the third leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, the BMW Championship at Cog Hill while Top 30 will move over to play the final event, The Tour Championship presented by Coca Cola.
