Luke Donald was lucky not to get admission in Stanford
The world number one Luke Donald has recently admitted that his life could have been completely different if he had received a chance to go to Stanford instead of Northwestern for his college.
He talked about his career swing while he was on a trip to his alma mater. He said that he was a candidate for Stanford along with another applicant named Jimmy Lee.
However, there was only one scholarship to be awarded and the Stanford Coach Wally Goodwin asked Lee to join him in the end. Therefore, Donald then had to move to Northwestern.
"I knew nothing about the American college system," the Englishman said last weekend. "I thought I was going to go to Stanford. They had one scholarship, and it was between me and this other guy named Jimmy Lee. Wally Goodwin could only get one of us in".
Donald also said that he was told that Lee was selected due to his better academic record.
"They told me it was academic stuff," Donald said. "I would have thought Northwestern had a high standard".
Now, he does not regret not getting the scholarship at Stanford, as he believes that he was lucky to get a chance to go to Northwestern.
He said that he owes a big thank to Lee for securing admission at Stanford. Otherwise, he could not have been able to achieve what he has done now.
"My biggest `thank you' goes to Jimmy Lee," he said. "If I got the nod, who knows?"
After a successful 2011 golf season, Donald was everywhere on the news and people’s minds as well. He was the PGA player of the year and won the money list titles on both the European as well as the PGA Tour.
That is a mark that no one else in the history of the game has ever achieved. Moreover, the same year witnessed him move to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career.
In 2012, he lost the top spot but regained it each time he lost it to Northern Ireland’s young superstar Rory McIlroy.
Donald is no doubt one of the best players the sport has ever seen.
