Luke Guthrie off to a good start of his professional career
Luke Guthrie, a former All-America at the University of Illinois, turned professional after participating in this year’s NCAA Championship and has been giving scintillating performances since.
Prior to stepping on the big stage, he recorded three victories early in the season and continued his form on both the Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour.
He made his professional debut at the PGA Tour’s FedEx St. Jude Classic and tied for the 19th position. A month later, he shared the fifth spot at the John Deere Classic.
That was a time when he started leaving impact on his rivals as the star of the future. He made his third PGA Tour start at the True South Classic and once again succeeded in recording a top-20 finish, as he tied for the 18th position.
He played all the three tournaments on sponsor exemptions and proved his worth with amazing performances.
At the end of July, he made his debut on the Web.com Tour through Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational and lost to Ben Kohles in the playoffs to take the share of the second position.
He followed that up with a shared third position in the Cox Classic Presented by Lexus of Omaha and tied for the 10th position at the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper.
Overall, he has played a total of six professional tournaments so far and succeeded in making the cut in each of them. In addition to that, he managed to keep his name listed among the top-20 players on the leaderboard every time he finished the tournaments.
"For me it's been just playing my game," Guthrie said about his fast rise through the ranks of pro golf. "I try to make it a point that even though I was playing in my first PGA TOUR event I was nervous but I just focused on golf and just played my game.
It's still just golf".
"I've tried to avoid thinking about the money or thinking about how much this putt would mean and things like that," he added about what is different from his amateur days. "I think that's not a good mentality to have ... I try to put the lowest score next
to my name".
He is now ranked 20th in the Web.com money list and has the potential to hold a top-25 position till the end of the year. If he does so, he will be eligible to play on the PGA Tour for the complete 2013 season.
