Luke Guthrie wins Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft
The Web.com Tour rookie Luke Guthrie finally recorded a victory at the Albertsons Boise Open Presented by Kraft, after finishing the event with a tournament record 22-under par 262.
His closest rivals on the leaderboard, Richard H. Lee, Scott Gardiner, Michael Putnam and Steve Wheatcroft, were settled at an 18-under par tournament score.
Guthrie had been making the news since he turned professional this year. In his debut professional event, the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational, he took the second position on the leaderboard after getting defeated in the playoffs.
The very next tournament, the Cox Classic Presented by Lexus of Omaha, witnessed him take the share of the third position.
He did not stop and recorded another two top-10 finishes in the next two tournaments that he played.
However, he lost the momentum at the Mylan Classic two weeks ago, when he missed the cut after posting rounds of 73 and 71.
Yet, that did not have much effect on his performance, as he bounced back with a strong finish at the Hillcrest Country Club on Sunday.
He got off to a confident start and recorded a birdie on the second hole, followed by a sparkling eagle on the third hole. Thereafter, he posted another four birdies against a lone bogey for a six-under par 65.
"It was awesome," said Guthrie of his day. "I know it probably hasn't sunk in yet. I couldn't be more proud of how I played".
Guthrie learned from earlier mistakes -- he was the 54-hole co-leader at the Cox Classic last month but finished T3 -- and did his best to relax and enjoy the challenge.
"One of my main goals today was just to have fun," he added. "I kind of shot myself in the foot a few times just being too uptight and wanting it too bad and worrying about where this might put me on the money list”.
The victory has now moved him to the fourth spot in the Web.com Tour’s money list, which will earn him a card for playing the tier-one PGA Tour in the 2013 golf season.
