Luke Guthrie wins two in a row on the Web.com Tour
The Web.com Tour rookie Luke Guthrie recorded his second victory in a row, when he followed his success in the Albertsons Boise Open with a win in the WNB Golf Classic on Sunday, September 23, 2012.
Guthrie has been playing phenomenally well, right from the beginning of his debut performance at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational.
Guthrie started off his professional career campaign with four consecutive top-10s on the Web.com Tour.
Early this month, he missed the cut at the Mylan Classic. However, he did not let a single bad finish overhaul his overall performance on the Tour.
He then bounced back strongly with a win in the WNB Golf Classic. Afterwards, he maintained his consistency in Texas and entered the final round with a tied fifth position in hand.
Standing on the first tee on Sunday, he was five strokes behind the overnight leader Danny Lee. Yet, it did not bother him much, as he made an early charge on the leaderboard with a run of three straight birdies on the first three holes.
The most amazing moment of the day came when the 22-year-old rolled in the ball for a birdie from 50 feet to the cup, on the third hole.
"I was just trying to lag it down there close and it found the cup," chuckled Guthrie.
The sixth hole witnessed him drop the only shot of the day. Thereafter, he added another four birdies to his scorecard and surged to the top of the leaderboard in the end.
"I'm just trying to ride it out," he said of his stellar play. "As a golfer you go through these runs where the hole gets bigger, your mind slows down and it seems easy. The trick in golf is have more days like this than the bad ones”.
The winner’s cheque of $99,000 also took him to the top of the Web.com Tour’s money list. He now has total earnings of $382,463.
In the meantime, Lee carded four birdies against the same number of bogeys to record an equal-par score.
His overall score at the end of the tournament was a 16-under par 272 – one behind Guthrie.
