Luke McAlister set to make first appearance in 2011 ITM Cup against Bay of Plenty - Rugby
Luke McAlister, who was dropped from North Harbour side after missing the practice session for the first match of ITM Cup, is ready to play his first match of the event against Bay of Plenty on July 23.
McAlister recorded his protest against the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) for not including him in the All Blacks’ crew for the Tri-Nations Cup and refused to participate in the practice session with his provincial team North Harbour last Monday. The North
Harbour coach, Liam Barry, took immediate steps because of the violation and dropped McAlister from the opening game of the ITM Cup played on July 14 against the Otago.
The 27-year-old fly half has been around the New Zealand’s national side since 2005 and represented the All Blacks’ side on 30 occasions. McAlister, who also plays at the inside centre position, has a wonderful record with the All Blacks as he has earned
153 points for his team in just 30 outgoings. McAlister also plays in the Super Rugby format for the Blues and his track record is even better with the derby. He has collected 345 points for his Super Rugby conference in 45 matches.
The young player was also not included in the second game of North Harbour. However, he has now been given a chance because centre Rudi Wulf will miss the clash due to a shoulder injury.
The assistant coach of the Bay of Plenty, Paul Feeney, told the media on July 22 that they are also making a few changes in their side to take on the North Harbour team. Both sides will play their third match in the current provincial championship on July
22. Paul Feeney further said his players are excited to play their first home match of the event. He added that, "The Steamers always relish playing at home, and are extremely comfortable and relaxed playing in front of family and friends at Baypark. The Steamers
recognise that it is a big game in front of their fans, and won't be taking the challenge from the visitors lightly."
North Harbour has played two matches in the competition and remained a winner in one outgoing against Tasman on July 19.
