Luke Pendock dominates 50m freestyle heat at the South Africa Age Group Championships
South Africa’s Luke Pendock, coupled with a beautiful freestyle stroke has dominated the Men’s 50m freestyle heat in the morning session at the South Africa Age Group Championships. He won the hearts of audience with his wonderful finishing time of 23.71
seconds to qualify as the fastest South African freestyle swimmer in 2011.
Pendock, who competes in the 17-18 age group, was followed by Chris Vd Sande and Brett Walsh in a time of 23.93 and 24.08 seconds, respectively. The race was so thrilling that all remaining finishers touched the wall in less than 25.00 seconds.
The ferocity of the battle was not limited to the highest age group only, as 16-year-old Reynard Wessels, won his age-bracket race in a time of 23.92 seconds to proceed to the finals. Zaahir Gamiet and Jonathan VD Merwe followed him in a time of 24.60 and
24.62 seconds, respectively.
The 15-year-old Mickey Olivier encountered the same in his age bracket, where he occupied the fastest seat in a time of 24.70 seconds ahead of Clayton Jimmie and Caydon Muller, who touched the wall in 24.77 and 24.82 seconds, respectively. Olivier cleared
his way to the finish line for the first spot with his stronger kicks, as he just out-touched Jimmie with a 0.07 seconds lead.
The 14-year-old Mark Hunter led his way to win the gold medal for the 50m freestyle in his age group, with a timing of 25.98 seconds. He was comfortably ahead of Cameron Coleman and Mathys Goosen, who touched the wall second and third in a time of 26.16
and 26.21 seconds, respectively.
A little down the age bracket, 13-year-old Kyle Van Niekerk conquered his 50m freestyle swim in 26.26 seconds and qualified as the fastest swimmer for the finals. Gareth Wood and Divan Piesanie followed him as the second and third fastest swimmers in a time
of 26.48 and 26.77 seconds, respectively.
In the 12-year-old age group, Trent Panzera qualified as the fastest swimmer in 27.43 seconds followed by Daniel Merwe and Kevin Bargate, who clocked in a time of 27.80 and 28.10 seconds, respectively. These swimmers will face each other at the finals in
the evening session of the day.
