Luke Saville downs Gianluigi Quinzi in the semi-finals – Boys’ Singles: Wimbledon Championships 2012
Top seed, Luke Saville of Australia, raced to the title match by beating Italy’s third seed, Gianluigi Quinzi, in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-finals of the Boys’ singles event at the Wimbledon Championships on Friday.
The Australian needed only an hour and six minutes to topple his opponent in an easy match.
Saville and Quinzi held their serve in the opening three games of the match to take the score to 2-1 in the former’s favour. The Australian grabbed a breakthrough in the fourth and consolidated on it to attain a 4-1 advantage.
Saville maintained his lead till the end, sealing it 6-3.
The Australian contestant fired two aces and did not make any double fault, hitting 87 percent of the first serves and grabbing 19 of the 26 points on them. He lost only one point on the second deliveries, claiming three of the
four of them. The 18-year-old played extraordinarily at the net, as he won 11 of the 14 points with the help of volleys. The Australian did not give any break opportunity to his opponent and utilised one of the three he created of his own in the opener.
The second set saw Saville and Quinzi holding their opening serves to take the score to 1-1. The Australian captured three in a row afterwards, striking in the third and fifth game to race to a 4-1 advantage. Quinzi shortened the
trail, as he won following two games to take the score to 3-4. However, the Italian was unable to pull the second break back, losing it 4-6.
Saville banged in three aces but he also committed one double fault this time. The Australian put in 75 percent of the first serves and converted 15 of the 18 of them into points. The right-hander continued to play almost error
free at the net, winning 10 of the 11 points. Saville attacked his opponent, as he pounded 12 winners and made eight unforced errors.
The Australian is the number one junior played in the world but he has also started to play in the men’s events. He played in the Brisbane International at the start of this year but lost to the then 122nd ranked player,
Tatsuma Ito of Japan, in the second round of the qualifying draw. He lost in the opening qualifier at two more of his home tournaments, Apia International Sydney and Australian Open.
Saville will take on the fourth seed, Filip Peliwo of Canada, in the title match.
