Luke Saville downs Joris De Loore in Boys’ Singles quarters – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Australian Luke Saville came back after losing the first set to knock out Joris De Loore of Belgium in three sets 6-7(1), 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the boys’ singles event at the Wimbledon Championships in London on Thursday.
It took the Australian an hour and 41 minutes to beat his opponent in a tough contest.
Saville and De Loore could not create any break point opportunity in the first set, levelling the score at 6-6 to force a tie-break. The Belgian was almost flawless in the tie-break as he dropped only one point and won it 7-1.
De Loore delivered 67 percent of the first serves and four aces in the first set. The 18-year-old clinched an incredible 91 percent of the first service points in the opening set. The Belgian smashed sixteen winners and grabbed
seven of the ten net approach points in the first set.
Saville fought back in the second set, breaking the Belgian in the first game and holding his serve in the next game to take a 2-0 lead. The Australian and De Loore held their serve in the next six games to take the score at 4-2
in favour of the former. Saville broke again in the seventh game and served out the set in the next game, clinching it 6-2.
The Australian fired 85 percent of the first serves and four aces in the second set. Saville hit eleven winners and committed just two unforced errors in the second set. The 17-year-old sealed 75 percent of the second service points
and 46 percent of the receiving points in the second set. Saville did not play well at the net as he won just three of the nine net approach points in the second set. The Australian converted two of the four break points he received on De Loore’s serve and
saved both break points he faced on his own serve in the second set.
The deciding set was almost a repeat of the second set as Saville dropped just two games, breaking his opponent twice and capturing the set 6-2.
The Australian served quite well, hitting a whopping 88 percent of the first serves and five aces in the third set. Saville had an amazing conversion rate as he converted 100 percent of the first serves into points in the final
set. The sixteenth seed played aggressively, smashing sixteen winners in the third set. The Australian capitalised on both break point opportunities he created on the Belgian’s serve and did not face any break point on his own serve in the deciding set.
Saville is drawn to face unseeded Kaichi Uchida of Japan in the semi-finals. The Japanese beat eighth seed Mate Pavic of Croatian in three sets 4-6, 7-6(7), 10-8 in the quarterfinals.
