Luke Saville ejects Evgeny Karlovskiy; moves into Boys’ Singles quarterfinal – Wimbledon 2011
A tough victory for the 16th seed, Luke Saville of Australia, against the resilient Evgeny Karlovskiy of Russia, puts him in the quarter-finals of the Boys’ Singles category at Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday.
The contest took one hour and forty two minutes to conclude, with Saville coming out as the winner in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6(7), to book a place in the final eight of the Grand Slam tournament.
It was an evenly poised contest being played at the Court 9 of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, with both boys playing some quality tennis all around. Saville lacked lots of things in
his game but he still managed to take advantage of the bleak game of his Russian opponent to win the competition.
Saville manoeuvred his way through the opening set after registering a critical serve break to Karlovskiy in the twelfth game. The Australian toiled hard to take down the aggressive Karlovskiy in the second set, which alone lasted
for 67 minutes, finally ending in a tie breaker round, which Saville clinched to conclude victory.
The Australian served with 62 per cent precision in the contest and reeled off 41 out of 55 first serve points in the game, with four double faults. Savilled coughed 27 unforced errors in the matchup as compared to Karlovskiy’s
mere 18 but he still forced his way to victory in the end. The difference between the two contestants lied in the number of winners, with Saville leading with 46 and the Russian lagging far behind with just 20.
Karlovskiy had his chances in the match but he frittered them away carelessly, converting just two of the 11 break opportunities he had in the match. The Russian court was frequently raided by Saville, who launched a series of
forays to the net, converting 29 out of 43 approaches in the contest to come out as the winner.
The opening set took off with some intense tennis from both players but Saville took the better of his opponent by drawing first blood in the twelfth game to seal the first set at 7-5. The action continued in the following set
as well, driving the set in to tie breaker round after an exchange of two serve break each. Saville toiled hard in the decider but finally a mini-break from his racquet resulted in his victory at 7-6(7), sending him into the quarter-final of the tournament.
The Australian will take on Joris De Loore of Belgium in the quarter-final clash on Thursday to get a spot in the semis of Wimbledon Championships.
