Luke Saville outclasses Kyle Edmund to reach the semis of the Boy’s Singles – Australian Open 2012
Top seed, Luke Saville, displayed flawless performance to trounce the British lad, Kyle Edmund, in straight sets at the Australian Open 2012 on Thursday. He manifested a 7-5, 7-5 success against the British youngster to book a spot in the final four of the Boy’s Singles event at this first Grand Slam held in Melbourne, Australia.
In a match which saw several exchange of serve breaks, the local star Saville edged past his rival in their first meeting to advance into the last four at the Melbourne Park.
The crowd favourite, Saville, high spiritedly entered the Margaret Court Arena and plucked in the opening three games in a row before Edmund could hold on. Despite of losing his serve in the fifth game, the Aussie exchanged another serve break and eventually levelled the scores at 4-4. He held his remaining serves smoothly and capitalised on another break opportunity in the last game to pocket the opener with a 7-5 victory in almost an hour.
The Aussie lost his track in the following set as he gifted away his serve in the third game and trailed at 1-2. Apart from recovering in the very next game, he lost his serve again in the seventh game. However, Saville redeployed his strategy afterwards and not only snatched his break back in the eighth game but also cashed in another break opportunity in the last game to clinch the set in 48 minutes.
Overall, Saville coughed 36 unforced errors but hammered more winners and clobbered a higher first serve share to cover it up. He also registered an impressive 36 out of 54 points on his first serve share sealed the match by winning 90 points as opposed to the British’s 78.
Awaiting the top seed is the Czech challenger, Adam Pavlasek, who upset the fourth seeded Japanese, Kaichi Uchida, in straight sets to reach this spot.
American qualifier, Mackenzie McDonald, will join the top seed in the final four. He bounced over the Czech youngster, Robin Stanek, in a three set thriller to book a place in the final four. The American teenager broke the Czech’s serve five times to manipulate a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in an hour 28 minutes long duel.
