Luke Saville outshines Filip Peliwo in the final round of the Boy’s Singles – Australian Open 2012
Top seed, Luke Saville, proved his class after rallying past the Canadian youngster, Filip Peliwo, in a three setter mouth-watering duel at the Australian Open 2012 on Saturday. He clobbered a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory over the Canadian to lift the Grand Slam
title at his home soil.
The local star took two hours to trounce Peliwo in a three set thriller at the Melbourne Park. He not only grabbed the major title but also earned the glory in his home Grand Slam.
“It feels really good to be champion here at the Australian Open… It’s] an experience I will take with me and cherish for years to come,” said the world number one junior after the match. Saville, who won the Wimbledon Championships in 2011, stepped on court
with the whole crowd supporting him.
“All the pressure and expectations was on me. To stand up to that ... and win the tournament, it's, you know, massive relief, as well,” he said.
Saville stormed into the opening set at the Rod Laver Arena and drew the first blood in the second game to eventually go 3-0 up. He then hammered massive forehands and backhands to hold his remaining serves and clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line.
The Canadian teenager got on track in the second set and earned the desiderated break in the second game. Apart from losing his edge in the fifth game, Peliwo maintained his composure and swiped in remaining serves. Later, he earned the breakthrough in the
last game and sealed the equaliser with a 7-5 win.
The 17-year-old Aussie shined again in the final set and sacked the critical break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Later, he kept remaining serves and plucked in the decider by winning six games to four.
Summing up the local booming star’s performance, Saville formulated a higher first serve share of 71 percent as opposed to the Canadian’s 61 percent and magnificently clicked 49 out of 67 points on it. He committed 29 unforced errors but smashed 29 winners
to cover it up. The Aussie ultimately ending the match with 92 points in contrast with Peliwo’s 87.
Saville is eying for the limelight in the Men’s Singles tournament in future and declared, “maybe put my hand up for a game here at the men's in twelve months' time.” He becomes the first local star to triumph this Grand Slam event since Bernard Tomic in
2008.
