Luke Simmonds gets past Lee Spick while David Gilbert ousts Steve Judd in second round of Q School 2011
Englishman, Luke Simmonds, had to play an extraordinary game to remove his opponent, Lee Spick, from the first event of Q School 2011, taking place at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield.
The English potter moved into the third round after grabbing a win over Spick with the final score at 4-3. David Gilbert defeated Steve Judd 4-1 to face James Welsh in the second round.
The best-of-seven second-round match between Luke Simmonds and Lee Spick started with a rattling clearance of 81 from Simmonds who was 5-11 behind Spick in the first frame. Simmonds clinched the frame victory by 86-11 to lead 1-0 in the match.
Spick responded however and bounced back to give his reply with an outstanding knock of 77 in the second frame and pulled level at 1-1 after winning the frame 0-91. In the third frame, Simmonds was already leading 21-6 over Spick when he fired a superb half-century
break of 57 to make it 78-6 and lead 2-1.
The Mansfield potter, Spick was taking every measure to unsettle his opponent during the match. He led 18-30 in the fourth frame after firing a 30-point knock, before a miss from Simmonds gave him another chance to make his mark. The 31-year old English
cueman potted a decent clearance of 48 and took the fourth frame easily to move the frame score to 2-2.
The fifth frame was completely dominated by Spick as he grabbed an early lead of 7-26, before making a decent break of 35 to take the frame 7-61 and grab a one-frame lead for the first time in the match at 2-3.
It was Simmonds' turn to respond now as he took back-to-back frames with scores of 67-33 and 109-4, and left his opponent stunned. Simmonds will now play James Welsh in the third round.
Meanwhile, World Number 55, David Gilbert finished his first round run after he beat Steve Judd with a comprehensive scoreline of 4-1 in the 4pm session of third day of Qualifying School (Q School). A stunning century break of 114 from Judd could only drive
him to one frame win, while the 29-year-old Gilbert grabbed the remaining frames with relative ease. The final frame score of the match was; 85-7 (Gilbert 65), 80-7, 0-118 (Judd 114), 75-12 (Gilbert 41), 74-34 (Gilbert 67)
