Luke Wilton clobbers Salim Salimov, targets Paul Edwards or Chris Edwards – Boxing news
Belfast flyweight Luke Wilton impressively defeated Bulgaria’s Salim Salimov on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the Holiday Inn and now wants to be up against Britain’s best fighter.
“Bring on the winner of the Paul Edwards v Chris Edwards fight,” said Luke. “I think Chris will win it and I’m ready for it as my next fight. I’m going to be ringside for that one. I think I’d have beaten Sexton on his last performance as well and we wanted
to fight him on the Haye-Klitschko show but he already has an opponent.”
Salimov, who won a bronze medal at the 2004 European Amateur Boxing Championships, was pretty much dominant in the early stages, as he used his height and reach to keep Wilton off balance with his jab. Moreover, Salimov also seemed picking up the points
effectively before Wilton showed maturity and turned the tables. Wilton hit him with a left hook in the stomach, which caused Salim hit the deck. The Eastern European, Salimov failed to rise in the required timeframe and thus lost the fight 0-34 in the third
round.
Wilton afterwards commented on his fight. He said he likes punching the body and used to enjoy Ricky Hatton landing those double hooks to the body. He added getting hit on the lower body is at times more painful than up in the head.
Wilton’s trainer Bernardo Checa, was also very pleased with Wilton’s performance. While speaking on his win, he said, “I’m pleased because he followed the instructions that we gave him in the corner. The opponent was tall so we told him to go to the body.
I think another one or two fights and he’s there [at British title level].”
Checa, who is Brain Magee’s trainer, also believes Wilton should fight more often, as he thinks there is a big gap between fights at the moment. He also admired Wilton’s physical fitness and said he can learn and improve a lot.
